THE WISH.
Could I obtain the bliss I most desire,
Virtue & beauty should my pray'r inspire
If I am doom'd to lead a single life,
And pass alone thro' all this scene of strife;
Then virtue's heave'nly pow'r possess my soul!
Thy precepts all my actions shall control:
Thee with unceasing ardour I'll pursue;
For thee all vain, ambitious thoughts subdue.
